Welcome back to another year, ready to start fresh and get back into the swing of things. We hope you had a nice time to relax over the holidays, catch up with friends and spend time enjoying the summer weather.
As the Term 1 beings, it is important that you set some goals that you want to achieve. This will help provide you with direction throughout the term and help you stay focused with the tasks that need to be completed.
In order to set some goals for the year ahead, here are some ideas to get you thinking…
- Recall you final report from 2018. Which subjects did you receive a mark which you want to improve in the coming year? Take some time to consider what an improvement looks like to you as everyone has a different perception of what it means to improve. For example, does it mean meeting the average mark in the year group, asking more questions in class or perhaps ranking within the top 10 students in class?
- Remember that all goals that don’t have to be academic. Your focus for the year might be on something besides your marks- maybe you want to make it into the school play or representative sports team. This will help keep you focused on the larger picture and also boost your self confidence.
- Look to the future – does the results of the year ahead impact on future opportunities? For example, if you are in Year 10 you will have the opportunity to select your s HSC subjects towards the end of the year. If you are wanting to pursue subjects such as Advanced English or Mathematics Extension, you will need to demonstrate that you are able to keep up with the demands. Therefore, it is important that you perform well in these subjects during your Year 10 studies to ensure that you are best prepared.
- When setting goals, we recommend adopting the SMART approach. You can read more about that here: https://www.smartsheet.com/blog/essential-guide-writing-smart-goals
In essence, each of your goals need to be broken down into individual elements to ensure that you have a way of looking back and knowing if your goal was met, what areas were missed and how you can make plans to address these areas.
