To start with, the full acronym extends out to National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. The aim of the tests are to assess students on general knowledge that is expected of them at the relevant year group. The tests are divided into different sections which aim to target various Maths abilities such as simple operations and then more complex problem solving. A variety of English skills are also tested including spelling, grammar, reading and comprehension. Check out their website to learn more about the different tests: https://www.nap.edu.au/home
Whilst the exams are designed to test students individually in order to ascertain their abilities, there are also other uses for the results. For example NAPLAN is used as a resource for teachers and other support staff to understand the overall performance of a cohort to ensure that minimum standards have been achieved across the key performance areas. Holistically, schools will then use the results to steer their lessons for the remainder of the year to ensure that the areas of concern are addressed.
At Tutoring4All we assist with NAPLAN preparation depending on the individual needs of each student. Rather than focus on the content of the exams, we tend to revise overall with exam techniques to make sure that students feel comfortable when exam day comes. We cover the different ways questions are asked, how to best answer a question and also familiarise them with the way to complete the different exam sheets on the day.
