We all know the feeling. We have spent past weeks studying for the upcoming exam. Countless hours making sure that everything assessable time, down to the last detail, is revised and understood. The quotes are memorised and all the mathematical equations are etched in our minds. We are ready to go. Bring on the exam.

The paper is presented and the teacher pronounces the famous words, “You may begin”. Your mind starts racing and you being to recall the late night study you had only finished six hours ago. You read the first page and your mind goes blank. You continue on…but the situation doesn’t improve.

What is going on?

You receive the exam paper back and hit yourself at all the red marks. You knew the exact answer to that question yet you second guessed yourself and crossed it out at the last second.

This scenario is more common than you think. Often from our experience we find that it is not the lack of studying or revision that contributes to this situation. Rather it is the type of studying and the mental preparation. Here are some of our tips to get you through:

  • Take a deep breath when you open the first page. This instantly clams your brain and slows down the pace at which it is trying to process.
  • Tell yourself that you can do it – it is through mental preparation that you will smash the exam
  • Take your time and go slow. Forget about the time limit and take each question one step at a time.

The above are areas which we find are crucial to learning at Tutoring4All. Not only is the content crucial but the exam technique is also essential. It seems to be counter productive if you have the knowledge of the content yet are unable to make use of it.
