Ah, the good old question. This is by far one of the most asked questions. No matter how many times our tutoring team is faced with the question, the answer remains the same – there is no simple answer…and it depends.
Tutoring means different things to different students and parents. For some, it’s a dedicated hour of focus where the student can go through an assignment, revise a particular topic or understand something that they have been struggling with for a long time. For others, it’s a time where they want to extend themselves beyond what they learn in the class room. And again, some students need the 1 hour just to keep up with the fast pace momentum of school.
This just goes to show – there isn’t one right answer and all reasons are justifiable in their own way.
Some students struggle to sit on their own and concentrate on the task at hand, such as their homework, without having someone beside them. This is a totally normal situation that our tutors can help with. They also share with our students the skills to ensure that they can develop concentration skills on their own which they can then use to master the ability to focus on their own terms.
Other students want to excel beyond the classroom. This is fantastic, and we encourage those who feel this way. For them, tutoring means looking at questions from the year group above them or analysing a text with a complex question. We foster this learning and have the resources available for students who want to take this next step.
Then again, the amount of school work and assessments can be a truck load. They all get issued at the same time and are due in the space of a few days. This is often a stressful period and can cause some feelings of unease for both parents and students. Therefore, tutoring for this situation will be going through the assessments, drawing up a timeline of the tasks due, understanding what is required and then working through them one by one.
And some weeks, it’s a combination of all of the above. Things get thrown at you that weren’t expected and that’s just part of the learning journey. Our tutors are here with their full support and are willing to do whatever it takes to help each student.
All in all, tutoring doesn’t have to be a set hour of any particular thing. Often we find that the most effective is when there is a combination because the student gets the most out of this experience and learns skills whilst also understanding the content.
