Most of our students come to us with similar struggles. They want to improve their writing, understanding of texts and little things such as spelling and grammar. As tutors, we do our best to provide assistance. We teach all the little rules like i before e except after c, and provide support tackling Shakespeare.
But if there is one tip we can give that you can do to help yourself – it’s to read.
Read anything.
Read a book. A magazine. An article. A biography. A newspaper. A blog. A historical recount.
The simple act of reading does more than you think.
It helps with your understanding and comprehension. It helps your brain look for little clues and signals that aren’t necessarily written in black and white on the page. It allows the brain to come to understandings on its own.
It helps with your spelling. The brain captures the images of words and the next time you come across the word, your brain recognises that the spelling isn’t right. It knows to try again without someone else bringing it to your attention.
It helps with your grammar. When do you use a comma with direct speech? When is a semi colon appropriate? When is the right time to use an…ellipses? The more you read, the more you will engage with the correct use of grammar and know how to use it the next time you’re writing your masterpiece creative writing story!
It helps with your writing. Increasing the variety of text types you read will expose you to different styles of writing. Different ways of expressing an idea. Different ways of engaging with your audience. It might seem ironic that reading helps with writing but it’s probably the most direct link.
So, as we head into 2018, if there is one tip from us, that’s to read. Once you do pick up that book or magazine or newspaper, let us know how its helped you!
